10 Time Management Tips For Everybody
One minute it's 7am and before you know
it, it's 11am already. In fact, from my experience it seems time moves faster
when we are not doing anything or when we are doing less important activities.
I've had many problems with time management myself and have read many books on
time management to help myself out.
Time for us is too important. In fact,
it's the most important commodity for us when we lose it, we can never get it
back. But this article is not about the times we've lost but rather about how
we can make up for the lost time.
Time itself is the only scarce resource and it's supply is inelastic according to P. F Drucker and he is right. You can get more money but you can't get more time so the only choice we have is to manage it. It is perishable and can't be stored. You can substitute one resource for another but for time? It is irreplaceable
Here I will examine Top 10 tactics i use to save time and do more every day.
1. First things First
As am writing this article, i want to:
- See an episode of the Magicians series
- A full season of the good wife
- Watch football highlights
- See some Tennis highlights
- Read my Whatsapp group messages
- Check my Facebook, Instagram and my twitter accounts and
many other tasks.
Now, here is the catch, the time i will use to do these unimportant tasks will probably be more than the time it will take me to write this article (especially when am feeling inspired as I am now). So, I made the bold but inconvenient choice to write this article first (am writing this at 5:24 am). The best clue to save time and do more is not really about doing more tasks per day, it is about doing the important ones first. Get your priorities right
2. Have a routine/Schedule
If you don't have a schedule it will be difficult to get
things done. Routines are important, set a time when you know you're most
effective and do the important things then. For me, it is at night for most
people it is the morning, so learn to do the important things when you function
best.
3. Set deadlines
Have you heard of Parkinson's law? It states that work will take as much time
as you allocate for it. If i want to complete this article in a day, i will. If
i have 5 years to write it, it will take me 5 years. This is true for most of
us. Deadlines are good, it keeps us on our toes
4. Focus
Doing two things at a time seems nice,
we often thing the more we multitask the more things we get done but this have
been proven wrong times without number. Focus on one task at a time and see it
to completion.
5. Set goals!
Goals are different from dreams in the sense that they have
time frame. e.g I can have a dream of writing 50 articles, it becomes a goal
when I say I want to write 50 articles in a month. Goals are like dreams with
deadlines. Set long term goals and short term goals.
6. Take breaks
In between your works, take breaks if possible take short naps. It is good for
out health and it refreshes us. Even a computer sometimes needs a restart.
7. Delegate
You can't do everything! And that's why you have to allow others to help. If
there are tasks you don't like or wish to do, simply allow people to do it for
you. It saves your time and allow you to focus your energy on other things.
8. Be on Time
It
is often said that Punctuality is the soul of business and it is true not just
for business but in every part of our life. Always be on time! It saves your
time, enables you to be more productive and improves your self-worth.
9. Avoid Procrastination
Procrastination- popularly called the thief of time is nothing new to us all. Sometimes we just love to do it. It must be avoided at all times. Setting deadlines is a way around it.
10. Be Organized
Being
organized is one of the best ways to save time and be more productive at the
same time. There is so much to do that we can actually be lost in them and
being organized can easily. Proper filling for office workers is an
essential step for organization, you can spend more time looking for one file
or the other .
Follow these easy tips to get more organized:
-Arrange your house and put things where they should be
-Create better filling system at your office
-Keep your office work place organized
-Keep your PC and Emails tidy
It's amazing how much time we can save by being organized!
